Recycled and renewable describe different material attributes. Readers reviewing SPG’s packaging statements should preserve those categories when asking about a product’s composition rather than treating them as interchangeable evidence of environmental performance.

Define each material category separately
For the package under review, ask which components are included and how the relevant material attributes are defined. A combined headline category may not tell a buyer how much of a particular component comes from recovered material or a renewable feedstock.
Keep composition questions separate from recovery and performance questions. Material origin does not by itself establish how a finished package will be collected, processed or used. A supplier review becomes clearer when the specification, supporting material statement and end-of-use assumptions occupy separate rows.
Questions to put in the file
- Which components does the statement cover?
- How are recycled and renewable defined in the supporting record?
- Is the figure combined or separately reported?
- What evidence connects the claim to the actual specification?
A practical evidence worksheet
| Field | What to retain |
|---|---|
| Component | Material and specification revision |
| Attribute | Defined recycled or renewable category |
| Support | Applicable material statement and limits |
Worked example
A package includes a fiber outer structure and a polymer insert. A buyer asks for component-level information rather than applying a group-level materials statement to both parts. The file records the supplier’s answer and marks any missing information. The exercise does not assume that either material is automatically preferable in every use.
What the record can establish
Preserve the categories and the component boundary. A clear materials record is more informative than a broad label detached from the package.
