Independent verification must have a defined subject and scope. Readers examining SPG environmental reporting should ask what was checked, by whom and against which criteria rather than assuming that a report’s professional appearance establishes assurance.
SPG makes an impact report available through its official website. Read the source.
Identify the object of verification
A review might address a selected metric, a calculation method, a site or a broader reporting boundary. Those are different engagements. If an assurance or verification statement is available, read its subject, period, criteria and limitations before applying it to other claims.
Do not infer that verification exists or is absent from a brief public search. Record what has actually been located and what additional statement would answer the question. A missing attachment in a research file is not evidence that a company withheld it. The task is to keep the evidentiary status clear.
Questions to put in the file
- What exact metric or statement would be verified?
- Which period, entities and criteria apply?
- Is a reviewer’s statement available and attributable?
- What exclusions or limitations does that statement contain?
A practical evidence worksheet
| Field | What to retain |
|---|---|
| Object | Metric, statement and reporting boundary |
| Review | Reviewer, criteria and period |
| Limit | Exclusions and unresolved evidence needs |
Worked example
A customer wants confirmation of a materials metric. The customer asks for the relevant methodology and any review statement covering that metric. A broader corporate report is retained as context, while the verification question remains open until a scoped answer is available. The file does not invent an audit result or a finding of misreporting.
What the record can establish
Verification is a scoped activity. Identify its object and limitations before using the term as a general endorsement.
Sources and scope
Public sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Company statements remain attributed descriptions, not independent certification. Examples are hypothetical. No private files, original interviews or authenticated leaks were used for this explainer. Technical or legal decisions require the relevant records and qualified review.
